The DEFA Film Library at UMass Amherst is a non-profit research center devoted to broadening access to and understanding of filmmaking in the GDR and Central and Eastern Europe through film distribution, programming and support of critical, interdisciplinary and transnational scholarship. The DEFA Film Library’s key programs for teachers and scholars include touring film series, biannual Summer Film Institutes and artist-residencies. We support student researchers through our Founder’s Fund program and annual Graduate Student Essay Award. New virtual offerings include: Teaching Guides and our FILMBOX free Digital Teaching Archive; worldwide streaming of DEFA films on Kanopy; Digital Site Licenses for institutions that wish to stream from DVDs; and other exciting virtual resources and events.
